The National Screenwriters Conference is a must for every writer working in film, television and new media. A biennial event presented by the Australian Writers' Guild the conference features panel discussions, case studies, networking opportunities, mentorships and exclusive Masterclasses with international guests. In 2009 the National Screenwriters Conference was held in February in the beautiful wine country of the Barossa Valley. The AWG brought Darren Star to Australia to head a stellar line up of guest speakers . Star is one of the world’s biggest names in television responsible for creating the legendary Sex and the City, Melrose Place and Beverly Hills 90210. The AWG was also honoured to have VP of the WGA West and acclaimed children's screenwriter, David N. Weiss (Shrek 2, Daddy Day Camp, Clockstoppers, Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, Rugrats in Paris: The Movie) speak at the conference. Other special guest speakers included some of Australia’s best and most provocative filmmakers: Ten Canoe’s Rolf de Heer; The Black Balloon writer/director Elissa Down; Andrew Bovell (Lantana), and Oscar nominated Jan Sardi (Shine) whose new feature Mao’s Last Dancer premiered late last year to high acclaim.
