AWG welcomes NSW Government response to AI recommendations

The Australian Writers’ Guild welcomes the NSW Government’s response to the parliamentary inquiry into AI and its commitment to ensuring the rights of artists are protected.

Recommendation three of the inquiry has been accepted by the government, namely “that the NSW Government advocate to the Australian Government for greater protection of the copyright and intellectual property of those working in creative industries in light of the challenges presented by generative artificial intelligence.”

AWG and AWGACS Group CEO ClairePullen said: “We are pleased to see the NSW Government so clearly support Australian creators and artists and acknowledge the ethical and legal concerns around the use of AI, particularly those relating to copyright and intellectual property.”

“We know that our members’ work has already been used to train AI systems without consent, so it’s imperative that decision-makers at all stages – from the state and federal governments to industry organisations and individuals – are working collaboratively to craft a regulatory framework that ensures consent, credit and compensation for creatives as soon as possible.”

“We look forward to continuing to work with government to build a robust framework that protects the economic and intellectual property rights of Australian artists and delivers a rich and diverse screen and stage culture for audiences.”
