Are you curious to know more about the nuanced world of script editing? For our next Lunch Break webinar, we’ve invited two experienced script editors Rachel Laverty and Jessica Brookman with decades of experience between them. What does a script editor’s role involve before and during production? What are some of the potential pathways to work in the field? Given that most script editors are writers too — how do you balance these competing parts of your brain on the job? Rachel and Jessica will also chat about the process of writers’ receiving notes and how best to navigate this.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS
Jessica Brookman is a writer, script editor and script producer who works across both adult and children’s drama. She is currently a script editor on Foxtel’s Wentworth: Halfway Home and previously script produced and wrote numerous episodes of Nickelodeon’s Rock Island Mysteries. She was a script editor on the second season of Troppo, and her writing credits include the BAFTA and International Emmy Award-winning fantasy series Nowhere Boys, the family drama musical The Secret Daughter and Itch, an adaptation of Simion Mayo’s bestselling YA novel. Jessica also spent many years staffed on Australian favourite Neighbours as story editor, storyliner, and writer, creating hundreds of hours of drama.

Rachel Laverty is a screen industry creative with 15 years’ experience in television and film; the last eight years working in scripted development. Her credits include Writer and Script Editor on Netflix ANZ’s Wellmania, Writer on Nickelodeon UK’s Rock Island Mysteries and Script Editor on Netflix ANZ’s Heartbreak High. Rachel also worked in-house for several years on Home & Away as Writer, Story Associate and Script Editor. Rachel has been twice shortlisted for the AWG John Hinde Award and was one of only 18 writers selected for the Netflix ANZ Grow Creative Writers Lab in 2022. In addition to her work as a Writer, Rachel is a Script Assessor for the AWG, helping her fellow writers tighten and elevate their scripts.
