Does your writing deal with themes of mental health and illness? This month on Lunch Break, Dr Elizabeth Paton offers AWG members bespoke advice on responsible portrayal of these themes.

The Mindframe program, supports safe and sensitive portrayals of suicide, mental health concerns, and alcohol and other drugs. This session provides practical and evidence-informed guidance to content creators and others working on projects addressing these themes, and includes:

  • A brief overview of the Mindframe program and the evidence that sits behind it
  • The guidelines in-depth
  • Examples of problematic and preferred screen depictions
  • Information about help-seeking and self-care
  • Opportunity for a Q&A with Everymind staff on Mindframe guidance.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER 

Dr Elizabeth Paton is Project Lead on the Mindframe program at Everymind, which supports safe media reporting, portrayal and communication about suicide, mental health concerns, and alcohol and other drug use. Prior to joining Everymind, Elizabeth worked as a media and communication lecturer, a science communication researcher and as an education and outreach officer for a neuroscience research centre. She holds a PhD in Communication and has taught and published across areas such as suicide prevention, responsible research and innovation, media, communication and the creative industries. She has also worked as a broadcast journalist and freelance writer.
