1 September 2026 – As part of your Guild’s effort to recoup historical unpaid superannuation, we ask that members who have been commissioned to write a television script by any of the following production companies please contact industrial@awg.com.au.
The production companies are:
- FremantleMedia Australia
- Matchbox Pictures
- Hoodlum Entertainment
- Wooden Horse
- Helium Pictures
- Easy Tiger Productions
The Australian Tax Office (ATO)and Creative Workplaces have recently published guidance confirming script writers’ entitlement to superannuation.
A television script writer is considered an employee for superannuation guarantee purposes if they are paid to perform services:
- in the making of a film, tape or disc;
- in recording content for online streaming;
- in any television or radio broadcast;
- required for that filming, recording or broadcasting to occur.
This applies even if the script writer is a sole trader with an ABN.
The majority of script writers have, historically, not been paid these entitlements. In recent years, we have seen change in our industry and many screen production companies are now complying with their legal obligations. However, the non-payment of superannuation remains a pervasive issue.
